On the day the government’s energy regulator, Ofgem, has announced the price cap increase, UNISON’s charity is calling upon branches to donate towards its Energy Support Fund. The charity aims to have raised £1m by the end of September, when it hopes to publish a comprehensive package of help for eligible members over the winter months. So far branches from Dorset to the Orkneys – and everywhere in between – have been donating; but we need one final push over the next month to make sure the charity can provide the help that our members so desperately need.

Branches can donate by completing the form here and individuals can donate here.
Despite our winter fuel grant being increased by 50% earlier this year, it was over-subscribed in a matter of days. Annual energy bills are expected to reach £3,549 after today’s increase is brought in on 1 October. And then again to £5,386 by January and £6,600 in April. The cap is even higher for low-income households using prepayment meters. Today’s new energy price cap means a home using a typical amount of energy will pay nearly £300 a month from October and, by April, could be facing bills of £550 a month.

Anything branches donate will be received gratefully and will continue to improve the lives of UNISON members and their families through these unprecedented, challenging times.
