Unison members were dismayed to be briefed on the council’s budget situation today.

We have endured 12 years of austerity, making so called efficiency savings year on year until our services are cut to the bone.

Our staff accepted yet another below inflation pay rise this year meaning staff have lost about a quarter of their spending power over that period.

There has been no fat to trim for years and too many of our staff are doing the jobs of two people as they attempt to paper over the cracks.

Being asked for suggestions as to what more cuts we can make is just a slap in the face to hard pressed staff.

We don’t need a conversation about how we can penny pinch a few more quid so that we can pay massively inflated bills to energy companies making super profits.

We need a conversation about how we can win the funding we need to deliver the services that the people of Plymouth deserve.
